Residency Lab: A Vital Component of Statewide Residency Technical Assistance Center (SRTAC)

Statewide Residency Technical Assistance Center Logo

SRTAC provides targeted technical assistance to enhance residency program outcomes. The TRL is building the capacity of Regional Hubs (County Offices of Education (COEs)) to support, scale, and sustain local residencies in their region. By leveraging existing relationships between COEs, Local Education Agencies (LEAs), and Superintendents, the Regional Hubs will expand residency programs, address educator shortages, and raise awareness and support for the residency model. With the help and support of TRL, Hub leaders will develop and implement Communities of Practice (CoPs).

The SRTAC is comprised of Santa Clara County Office of Education (SCCOE) as the lead COE, Humboldt County Office of Education (HCOE), Sacramento County Office of Education (SCOE), San Diego County Office of Education (SDCOE), and Tulare County Office of Education (TCOE). They’re joined by WestEd and UCLA Teacher Education and key advisors such as the California Teachers Association (CTA), the California Association of School Counselors (CASC), and the California School Employees Association (CSEA).

Supporting Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) with The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation

With support from The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, we’ll explore how residency programs can provide highly effective VAPA teachers to California’s public schools. We’re uniquely positioned to coordinate across agencies and education segments to include VAPA in residency programs. This focus will help LEAs prepare and train effective teachers to provide equitable arts opportunities for every student as mandated by Prop 28.

Advancing equity and justice with the Spencer Foundation and Sobrato Family Foundation support

Through this funding, we will continue advancing equity and justice, one of The Lab’s core strategies. A diverse and well-prepared teaching workforce increases student achievement. Residency program partnerships play a pivotal role in recruiting, training, and retaining teachers of color. By helping partnership programs strengthen their climate, working conditions, and curriculum, we can ensure that African American and Latinx teachers not only enroll, thrive, and stay in the profession but that all new teachers are prepared to support California’s diverse, multilingual student population effectively.

Bridging Equity-Minded Policy and Practice

The directors of the Residency Lab are committed to bridging equity-minded policy and practice. The Lab’s Equity Deep Dives (EDDs) with Drs. Travis Bristol and Jacquelyn Ollison have begun! This program addresses issues related to the lack of diversity in California’s teaching workforce by supporting and retaining teachers of color, especially black and brown males.

EDDs are communities of practice with teacher residency partnerships. In this community of practice, residency partnerships are empowered to support preservice educators of color through their preparation programs by developing structures of support and designing and implementing equity-focused promising practices that assist preservice educators of color in completing residency programs, being hired and retained by districts, and ultimately remaining in their profession. Virtual sessions or one-on-one coaching with participants are included in each session. Click here to learn more.
